E-mail Print PDF

Carputer

The carputer or in-car computer  resides in my VW Passat MK5 SE. I started the project because a fellow student at university had fitted a carputer into his rebuilt LandRover.

I've always been a fan of hi tech kit so a carputer seemed to fit nicely, it's quite a simple device not much different from home pc apart from the size and the fact that most home computers haven't got a touch screen.

The carputer has several components:

Motherboard
  • VIA EPIA MII Mini-ITX Mainboard
Hard drive
  • Fujitsu 60GB 2.5" .
Ram
  • Kingston 512mb, anymore more is over kill.

DVD -Rom/ CD-R/RW

  • Panasonic slot drive.

Smart in-car PSU

  • M1-ATX 90W
  • Input  6-24V DC
  • Designed not to flatten the battery with on board monitoring and smart shut down
  • Wires into the cars ignition for startup and shutdown.

Case in-car

  • Voompc 2 car case
  • Tough aluminium extrude with filtered air vent
  • Fan
  • Mounts for Mini-ITX Mainboard, Hard drive and Smart PSU.

Touch screen

  • Cartft.com 8.4" touch screen.

with optional kit:

GPS receiver

usb bluetooth dongle

usb hub

small/micro  or flexible keyboard
